In a gazette published on November 30, Sri Lanka placed glyphosate, a widely used herbicide, on the banned list under the country’s Import Control Act. In 2017, glyphosate was designated as a substance requiring authorization.

The newspaper notice states: “N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine and its salts and derivatives (Glyphosate)” HS Code 2931.39.10″ should be included in the items of Schedule IV (Prohibited) of the Special Regulations 2017.

Producers of tea and other commercial food crops in Sri Lanka have requested glyphosate because it is internationally recognized as a safer herbicide than others and leaves less residue.
